I made a dress for Bean's teacher, Sienna, as a good bye present for Bean's last day of daycare/pre-K. Sienna has been an extra special teacher in our lives this past year and a half and we are going to miss her. Not often do you get a chance in your lifetime to meet someone who truly loves and adores children to their core at 110%. Even when they are being challenging, Sienna always sees the positive in them and the situation, no matter what. I know I have really admired her for this rare quality. And then there were the times when traffic proved a nightmare for me to get from work to daycare. One time, my normally 10 minute commute took a frustrating hour and a half. Sienna was totally chill about it and she and her helper Bean cleaned up and closed down daycare (which closes at 6 pm) since they were the last two people there.
And this was on a Friday night. I told you she was one-in-a-million!
So Sienna is a huge Dr. Who fan (10th doctor, natch) and when I spied this particular fabric on Spoonflower, I just knew I had to get it and make a special dress for her.
Never one to leave well enough alone, later on I determined it needed a contrasting fabric. Enter a fabulous purple and white gingham! Unfortunately, the gingham showed through to the cotton poplin side so I ended up getting a lavender cotton batiste to line the gingham parts with. A purple zipper seemed much more fun than plain ole white, right?!
The more I make these dresses, the smarter I become with the process. I knew I needed to line up the pattern for the front panels. TARDIS aligned!
And then so proud of myself and my clever ways, I almost sewed the zipper in backwards.
Ooops!
As I mentioned earlier, Sienna is a big 10th Dr.Who doctor fan, played by David Tennant. I discovered this great fabric on Spoonflower as well. A swatch proved more than enough to have fun with on the inside dress yoke.
Inside pocket seams got a decorated stitch trim, utilizing my fancy new sewing machine from Xmas. See?
Doesn't the gingham and toile look beautiful together?
The inside arm seams are finished in gingham, too. Here is the dress, partially completed. I just need to get the dress collar attached.
The Doctor pensively considers my next sewing construction move...

Finished!!! The collar is attached and looks lovely. Considering I accidentally stitched that on backwards as well.
It's not going to be a successful sewing project unless my trusty seam ripper gets some action!
The collar is done so when down, you see the toile fabric on the top. When it's worn flipped up with the drawstring gathered and tied at the neck (an elegant Victorian pie crust collar effect) then you see the contrast of the gingham there, instead.
As I make this dress I add my own tweaks as I go along. I took an extra piece of fabric of the Doctor and stitched it over the bottom of the zipper on the inside of the dress. I've gone back and done this to all of my earlier dresses in this style (using their respective fabrics to do so) because the bottom of the zipper is hard and scratchy and gets caught on your clothes if you wear it over other things like jeans or wide legged pants.

In the background, my French Market Rooster dress I referred to as I stitched along on Sienna's.
This is the BEST dress in the whole wide world!!! For starters, it has POCKETS. I know, I had you sold on it by that fact alone, right? But not only pockets, this dress is very flattering on many different body types and lends itself well to so many different ways of being worn. I prefer to make this dress sleeveless so then I can layer it when the weather is cooler over short or long-sleeved t-shirts or even a turtleneck. This dress looks fabulous over tights or leggings. I love to wear mine over jeans, and it looks particularly cute with the jeans rolled up at the cuffs.
When I go away for the weekend, one of my dresses comes with me. It travels so well and can be worn so many different ways. And bonus, it's lets me just have one small piece of luggage to deal with. I can take the dress, a pair of jeans, a pair of tights, two t-shirts, bootcut yoga pants and a jacket and scarf and I've got more than enough options for a weekend away.
And did I mention the pockets? Awesome...
A lovely dress requires a beautiful gift box! I found the most appropriate box at the craft store, a box with Big Ben on the front and "London" printed on the top and sides.
Thank you Sienna, for being such an awesome and amazing teacher to our Bean!!! She is a better and smarter kid because of you.
